Koldrun – What’s the Deal for Guests?

You can read in more detail elsewhere on the site how the idea and principle of koldrun arose, but I’m going to explore a little here why I think that you, as a guest, may choose to make koldrun your ‘go-to’ for travel accommodation.

Koldrun is a new enterprise, and we are busy recruiting hosts that hold an active interest in the arts – graphic, music, photography, pottery, writing, performing, brushwork, design, tattoo, culinary, language, dance, etc

My interest in photography and travel has taken me to many places, varied situations and some challenges.

I have many friends that are artists, potters, musicians, photographers, and a common thread of conversation amongst them is how enjoyable it is to experience the differing and exotic variations of their chosen interests across the globe, and indeed across their own countries.

Different styles of music, art, crafts and performance, etc. All of these ‘variations’ have a base in local culture and explore the themes of the lives of the artists and artisans that make the work.

Without interest, intrigue, understanding and some emotional response to a piece of work – it just becomes an object or in some way ‘part of the wallpaper’.

Travelling is an immersive experience, mostly! (except for cruises I hope).  And mostly we can decide how deep we dive.

All art is a fusion of culture – either down a temporal, political, religious or geographic shift – it becomes the expression of influences in the eye/ear/hand of the artist, and we live richer lives for that.

But for all the joy of that fusion, that coming together of influence, technique, style, etc. Sometimes, as a visitor, it can be somewhat inaccessible or at least an uneasy effort to engage and participate.

Staying with a koldrun host – someone with a grounding in their local community, in their (and yours?) topic of interest – with connections, and ‘routes through’ – can really make your visit that much better-informed, better facilitated, and more enjoyable as a result.

I’ve taken holidays where I may just as well have watched it on TV.

But I’ve also taken trips where the engagement and hospitality of my hosts have been amazing, unforgettable and life-affirming.

In all cases these encounters have been amongst ‘ordinary’ local people, embedded in their landscapes, communities, cultures and families – not a view from a tour bus window or an organized trip out of a hotel.

That’s why koldrun is here – to give you the adventurer, the traveller, the person travelling for work, the student looking for meaningful knowledge of this world and this life a chance for connection, exchange and understanding…and a friendly cup of coffee.

Our hosts are the place you want to visit!
